Monte Hellman’s Iguana is a modern film for this director, who previously helmed skewed action films like Two Lane Blacktop and Cockfighter, as well as the equally skewed Westerns Meander in the Whirlwind and The Shooting.

Here he tells the memoir of a 19th century sailor, Oberlus, played by Everett McGill–a man whose face is half normal, half bizarrely deformed, earning him the nickname that gives the film its title. His fellow sailors dislike and ridicule him; he escapes to an abandoned isle in the Galapagos to attach his possess “kingdom” based on his declaration of war on mankind.

Making those who foolishly dock there his slaves, his kingdom grows to a total of five, aside from him–a studious ship’s clerk, a cook, a quiet, a graceful woman, and the rebellious broken-down captain of the ship on which Oberlus sailed. He brutalizes those who disobey him and rapes the woman repeatedly.

In spite of the character’s overly shaded psychology, Hellman infuses the film with a momentum based on Oberlus’ conflicting emotions. The Iguana, as it turns out, is not completely sunless. He wants to learn to read and forces the clerk to shriek him how. When the woman tells him she’s pregnant, his face seems to soften; he then treats her with what appears to be a sense of compassion. The feel of this film is made compelling not so great by the acting, which is dazzling yet not vast, but by the astute portraits of characters who acknowledge to their imprisonment in various ways. For imprisonment can be physical–shown by the leg-irons Oberlus makes his “subjects” wear constantly–or psychological, that is, of course, the prison in which he himself exists.

There are minor problems–McGill really doesn’t know how to utter with a convincing accent that seems to be an attempt at Cockney, but doesn’t quite perform it. And the beheading of one “slave” by another is not credible based on the dialogue that immediately preceded the monstrous event. Yet in spite of these and other miniature mistakes, this is a film all the more noteworthy because it is, in fact, based on a correct anecdote.

Not a classic, surely, but an attractive work from a man whose first film was, fill it or not, the Roger Corman produced “The Beast From Apprehensive Cave”. This (Iguana) was Hellman’s penultimate film. Spirited that he started with a monster and (almost) ended with one as well…

monte hellman’s iguana is a dependable win. i’m always on the lookout for films that can overwhelm me with their atmosphere and their artistry. only a few films have ever succeeded (friedkin’s SORCERER, argento’s INFERNO, some of fulci’s mid career films) . this film is by no means perfect. but what is fantastic is how hellman has created a stunning work of art; from the most unpromising of scripts hellman has crafted a haunting fairy yarn with a superbly realised mythical ambience. the script is terrible, mcgill switches accents a couple of times, and the manufacture up is terrible. but hellman utilises the mechanics of cinema (images, sounds, staging, cutting) to overcome budgetary and casting limitations, resulting in a film that is trashy but eloquent, haunting and astonishingly comely.

Hollywood makes movies all the time that involve the murdering of innocents. However, these movies rarely illustrate any sure consequences that result after the murders, let alone any spiritual sentiments or accurate concept that occur within the murders themselves. Destroy OF THE SPEAR is a film that not only does both these things, but also tells how the deaths of those killed helped bring about the salvation of an entire rush of people from the verge of a self-inflected extinction.

Buy,Download, Or Stream End of the Spear! Click Here

END OF THE SPEAR is largely a movie about the Waodani people. The Waodani are a people that live in the jungles of Ecuador. Despite the pressures of the outside world that continued to squeeze the environment and resources of the Waodani, they continued to live a self-sufficient and self-contained life in the jungle. That is, except for one crucial element: the Waodani were killing themselves to death. For whatever reasons, the Waodani had split into different tribes. The lack of resources and women caused the tribes to execute raids upon each other. If a child lived after one of these raids, he would grow up to contemplate revenge upon those who had killed his family. Thus, abet and forth the violence continued for several generations until only a handful of Waodani were left and they were on the verge of a self-inflicted genocide.

They were saved by a group of missionaries. Five young men slowly made contact with the tribe. Eventually, they attempted to have a face-to-face interaction with members from the tribe. The attempt ended in the slay of the five men (Jim Elliot and Nate Saint included) . Undeterred the wives and families of the murdered men contacted the tribe and came to live with them. This act of compassion, grace, and mercy proved to put the Waodani from both disease and themselves.

In Christian circles, the lives of Nate Saint and Jim Elliot have taken on almost mythic proportions. Attractive as their lives were, the movie Slay OF THE SPEAR helps to ground the record in truth and reality by telling the narrative from the perspective of Mincayani, a Waodani leader and the man who killed Nathan Saint.

END OF THE SPEAR was made on a shoestring budget with cramped promotion. Yet, except for the sometimes cheesy voice-overs, the relate appears to have the budget of a normal motion record. The cinematography is shimmering, the acting is grand, and the editing concise. There is a spiritual slant to the movie, but unlike many Christian films the Gospel message and record of conversion isn’t contrived. Instead, it occurs naturally and fits with the accelerate and memoir of the rest of the film.

Granted, Slay OF THE SPEAR isn’t for everyone. It begins rather slowly and there are a few awkward moments. Nevertheless, the filmmaking in Slay OF THE SPEAR is on par with the average Hollywood flick and its storytelling is on a level above noteworthy of the garbage that Tinsletown vomits out every year. The movie is not only based upon a honest record, but stays upright that tale and has a expansive message about compassion, grace, and reconciliation. Hollywood could learn a thing or two from a film like this.

Some of the magic of Hollywood is its ability to grasp a tale and form it “bigger than life”. Visually, graphically, technologically Hollywood is able to do extraordinary larger than life productions. What struck me about this movie is that instead of this movie being larger than life, the accurate lives lived by the men and women portrayed in the film were so mighty larger than the movie. That is not a criticism of the movie, instead it is a improbable window into the weighty actual lives that they lived. Often we survey movies in order to rush reality and enter into another world. This movie inspires us to enter into not an imagined world but into reality – the kind of reality that we all long for – a life that is weighty, loyal, meaningful – a life worth living.

If the name of Paul Brownstein isn’t familiar to you, by the time you peruse his improbable restoration work in the entire 5 season Van Dyke Series, you too will arrive to worship this man. He has painstakingly gone aid to the Fresh 35mm camera negatives and had each reveal digitally preserved onto these perfect DVD presentations. CBS never aired them in this contrivance, TV Land doesn’t display these films in this map either. It took a factual television fan to do the work that needed to be done. In addition, the archival footage obtained is astounding as well. Where others have failed, Mr. Brownstein was able to secure access to rare footage of the cast during rehearsals, at the Emmy Award telecasts of the 1960′s, commercials on the residence, color footage of Dick and Mary from 1969, a scene gash out and never aired and even was able to bag the surviving cast to do selected audio commentaries. These five volumes are the benchmark for any restoration / preservation television point to ever presented to the public. It was recently awarded a best DVD presentation for a series (2003) and it deserved to be so honored.
Bravo to everyone fervent and especially to Paul Brownstein, the best friend classic T.V. ever had.

Seek for this residence in the come future, this is probably another blueprint for Paramount to do money.) Also in the exhibit “The Celebrity Next Door” this episode is nick because it does no elaborate how Talula is allergic to strawberries, when originally aired Talula said that she got hives whenever she ate strawberries but on this position it does not clarify that. All of the other episodes are perfect and funnier than I remembered them!

A DVD spot was unbiased released called “Lucy’s Really Lost Moments’ and it will include many lost I Appreciate Lucy scenes and tons of other bonuses including Desi and Lucy appearing on a game indicate and noteworthy more. It is available online through Amazon and other websites and you may be able to retract it in some video stores also! The average label this spot costs online is $10 to $13 and is a Enormous value, I unbiased reserved my copy and can’t wait to scrutinize it!!!

I am so exited about “I Like Lucy” season 7-9 coming to dvd and I impartial can’t wait to salvage it at my door. This dwelling was originally aired on television as The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour and the name of this spot has been changed to “I Treasure Lucy,” as that is what it is and should have been called in the first set. The only incompatibility in this spot than in Season 1-6 of “I Like Lucy” is that these shows were one hour long episodes instead of half hour episodes, and it continues where Season 6 left off in Connecticut when the gang moved to the country.

These seasons have not aired on cable television as worthy as the other “I Admire Lucy” shows, and it is such a disappointment because there are Gigantic shows on here. Why do they not air grand??? This dvd box area includes 13 classic episodes at each being an hour long and so you secure over 13 hours of fun with this site, not mentioning the many bonuses. There will even be some scenes from “I worship Lucy” to be location in color and deleted scenes and flubs and fun commercials as well. You will also receive the “I Savor Lucy” movie!! It is 3 shows with a continuing sage line and has never been shown before, EVER. They were converse to air it attend in the 1950′s but it was cancelled due to the Release of “The Long Long Trailer” and it has been lost and forgotten for over 50 years and now we all can contain this. They figured that since “The Long Long Trailer was being aired that there was no need for this movie and decided not to air it.

One of my popular shows on this site is “Lucy Takes A Waft To Havana,” in this episode there will be a flash encourage of how Lucy first met Ricky on her hover to Havana. This episode was first originally aired as 75 minutes long but 15 minutes had to be gash out and Paramount is including the 75 petite long episode with this space, which hasn’t been seen since It’s fresh broadcast. Desi Arnaz did not want anything sever on this episode and he talked CBS in to keeping the added minutes. It took the fat 75 minutes to accomplish the episode perfect and Desi wanted everything, he would not choose for edited mumble. When this demonstrate was first originally aired wait on in the 50′s it was the fleshy 75 minutes with commercials but every since than it has appeared on cable edited. Desi Arnaz would be very proud to know that the chubby train is being released!

Here is the episode List:

1.) Lucy Takes A Hover To Havana

2.) The Celebrity Next Door

3.) Lucy Hunts Uranium

4.) Lucy Wins A Racehorse

5.) Lucy Goes To Sun Valley

6.) Lucy Goes To Mexico

7.) Lucy Makes Room For Danny

8.) Lucy Goes To Alaska

9.) Lucy Wants A Career

10.) Lucy’s Summer Vacation

11.) Milton Berle Hides Out At The Ricardos

12.) The Ricardos Go To Japan

13.) Lucy Meets The Moustache

These 13 hour long episodes were actualy portion of a series of specials titled “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” that originaly aired approx once a month on CBS between 1957 – 1960. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz had tired of the weekly grind of filming a series after 7 years and wanted to lop abet on their work load the result was this series of specials. Like the fresh series the note also featrued William Frawely and Vivian Vance as Fred and Ethel Mertz and of course Keith “Dinky Ricky” Thibodeaux. These shows took area in the Connecticut setting where the regular series left off although in some episodes the quartet did proceed to such places as Mexico and Japan among others. The first of these episodes titled “Lucy Takes a Hover To Havana” originaly aired as an 1 hr 15 min display, something unheard off abet then. This was due to the fact that after filming was complete the episode ran over the normal hour long exhibit (approx 50 mins with out commercials) Desi did not want to crop anything out so he convinced CBS to push the explain that followed it befriend by 15 mins and CBS agreed. The syndicated copy and the one on the CBS Video Library collection are the edited version. I am Pleased that these episodes are also being made available and search for forwrd to really completing my “Lucy” collection. From what I’ve read it looks like Paramount Home Video is giving this collection the same treasure and respect as they did the modern “I Adore Lucy”.

At one point in the BBC production of Casanova, the Italian ladies’ man jokes with his latest paramour that his surname translates as “lucky b*stard.” The real-life Giacomo Casanova claimed to have slept with 122 women and four men. Such a quick-witted life has sparked any number of dramatizations, including this three-part miniseries from the BBC (shown in the US courtesy of Masterpiece Theater) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Casanova! Click Here

The series opens with the elderly Casanova (Peter O’Toole), now librarian to a nobleman, writing his memoirs. An inquisitive serving girl, Edith (Rose Byrne) takes an interest in the traditional man, and he begins telling her about his adventures. The sage shifts support and forth between the show and the past; in brief vignettes, viewers peep young Giacomo’s childhood and adolescence, his education and sexual awakening. Finally, “Jack” reaches young adulthood; David Tennant takes over the lead, and the fun really begins.

The myth is sparkling mighty a dramatic fabrication, although some details are honest (e.g., Casanova’s intrepid prison sprint), and mighty of it comes off like an eighteenth century “Accumulate Me if You Can.” Casanova has no money or status or dwelling, so he gets by with a combination of intelligence, wit, trickery, and of course, sex appeal. Before long, he’s hobnobbing with the Venetian upper-crust and later traversing half of Europe, bedding one woman after another. But the genuine savor of his life is a enthralling young beauty named Henriettte, who naturally is engaged to Casanova’s arch-rival, Grimani. Powerful of Casanova’s schemes and exploits over the course of the film revolve around him trying to muster the resources to gather Henriette away from his enemy.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Casanova! Click Here

The series is, for the most allotment, exceedingly well-done. Its cornerstone is a tight, focused script (by Russell T Davies), crackling with witty dialogue. The record spools out at a obedient roam, and most of the characters are reasonably well-developed. As one might question, there’s a lot of bawdy sexual humor, but none of it is overdone. Casanova’s fancy for Henriette gives the memoir a solid dramatic anchor and lends sympathy to a character who otherwise would seem like a shallow womanizer. The older Casanova’s narration provides both framework and perspective, and in a nice touch, his sage is unexcited unfolding in the indicate even as he recounts his past. The direction (by Sheree Folkson) is generally crisp and effective, though there are some distracting gimmicky effects, making safe utilize of visuals and character reactions.

The tone really helps to sell this production–it’s lighthearted, romantic, dramatic, and poignant in exactly the accurate spots, taking itself seriously enough without taking itself too seriously. It also helps that the characters all feel very rooted in the culture and values of their times, and the script doesn’t scared away from brutal realities, including untimely death, barbaric executions, the rigid social structures imposed by money and place, and the slight options available to women.

Visually, Casanova is a sumptuous treat, with enough status work to sustain it from feeling set-bound. The interiors are sparkling, and the costumes are fairly eye-popping, with nice shifts in color schemes as the record switches from one dwelling to the next. Despite the quality and the lavish attention to detail, however, the production quiet looks cheap by American standards–colorful and over-the-top, but untrue. Oddly, this amateur-theatrical quality is allotment of the series’ charm, and it even provides some self-deprecating humor (e.g., an intelligent galleon bobbing across an ancient way indicates a sea voyage) . The acquire is spotty: noble in some places, wincingly synth-pop in others.

The production’s other large strength is the performances of the cast. O’Toole hits all the honest notes as the older Casanova, looking wait on on his life with a mixture of nostalgia, pride, wound, and regret. Remarkably, the seventy-something actor conveys a trusty sense of sex appeal, and his chemistry with the distinguished younger Byrne is agreeable. But the film belongs to Tennant, who gets the bigger chunk of camouflage time and brings exactly the correct combination of cheeky confidence and lovelorn vulnerability to the younger Jack. The character’s over-the-top behavior would be harmful in lesser hands, but Tennant’s nicely controlled performance keeps the viewers’ sympathy with Casanova at all times. Tennant also does grand work “aging” the character over the course of twenty years, as time, exhaustion, and disappointment all grasp their toll. His laughable timing is wonderful–a couple of scenes are screamingly comic (Casanova goes to confession, literally giving the priest a coronary), and Tennant’s delivery of lines like, “I’m the Italian with the wh*re!” are spot-on perfect.

O’Toole and Tennant are supported by a substantial and mostly able extended cast. Particularly impressive is Shaun Parkes as Casanova’s sidekick/ manservant Rocco: the two part some hilarious banter and have enormous chemistry together. Also strong is Nina Sosanya as Casanova’s second major worship interest, a singer named Bellino: she’s a exact presence, despite relatively itsy-bitsy conceal time. Byrne does profitable work as the keen and compassionate Edith. Perhaps the biggest surprise is Rupert Penry-Jones as Casanova’s rival Grimani: the character starts off as a pompous, rich boor, but layers are revealed as the memoir unfolds, building up to an emotionally distinguished scene that Penry-Jones plays to aching perfection. Probably the weakest link in the cast is Laura Fraser as Henriette–she doesn’t hiss considerable depth to the appreciate of Casanova’s life, making it hard to swallow that he’d go to such lengths for her. Given the scores of women literally throwing themselves at him, Henriette really needed to be a compelling presence, and she’s not all that different from his other paramours. It doesn’t assist that Fraser’s repertoire consists of a single facial expression, which starts off charming but starts to grate very hastily. She’s not terrible–she has a wonderfully comic scene where Henriette and Jack communicate by ticket language across a crowded ballroom–but in such an outstanding cast, she gets lost.

Overall, Casanova is a fun, gleaming romp, with considerable to recommend it. It’s to the series’ credit that the nearly three-hour running time goes by very rapid. I strongly recommend the DVD release over the edited version PBS is showing. Yes, the sex is fairly raunchy and leaves runt to the imagination, but it also provides noteworthy of the story’s humor, and one crucial exchange between Grimani and Casanova feels, well, neutered with so many dirty words crop out. The production has its campy moments, and some may net it too over-the-top, but underneath the trappings is a fairly classic esteem memoir with a lot of heart.

Casanova is one of the funniest offerings on Masterpiece Theater in years. A dramatization of the life of the famous rogue Giacomo Casanova, it is area in Europe during the eighteenth century at the height of the Enlightenment. Casanova was a nobody who traditional his obliging looks, charm, and intellect (all three of which were powerful) to get fortunes, lose fortunes, circulate in the highest social circles, sink to the lowest prison, and have a ample time doing it. At the same time he seems to have had a gracious sense of compassion and a kind heart which endeared him to many.

I have no concept how accurately this film renders Casanova’s precise life. I do know that the script is witty and the actors colorful (I particularly enjoyed Casanova’s many asides) . I also loved the disagreement between Casanova’s riotous early years and his dismal retirement as a librarian, telling his fable to a young woman who is appalled by his excesses, attracted by his charm, and finally becomes his last friend and ally. I enjoyed the disconnect between Casanova’s constant womanizing and his unfulfilled admire for Bellino and especially Henriette, who becomes a sort of guardian angel, pulling him out of some of his worst predicaments without his having a clue. I also enjoyed the “unique” music scores and dancing, which enhance rather than distract from the narrative, especially the “ball” at the French court, which is hysterical!

If you are only familiar with this production as it was shown on Masterpiece Theater, be forewarned that this is the unique uncut British offering, with plenty of sexual acrobatics (and some killingly comical scenes poking fun at England and the English! I can’t imagine why the Masterpiece Theater people slice those parts out!)

This is a amazing film that will support the viewer totally absorbed. Written by the tremendously talented David Mamet (The House of Games, Oleanna), it is beautifully directed by the notorious director Lee Tamahori (Once Were Warriors, Along Came a Spider) . The film is a complex, fully fleshed narrative covering many themes, fully realized by a stellar cast. It also provides the viewer with breathtaking cinematography, as well as a compelling procure written by Academy Award winner Jerry Goldsmith (The Omen) .

The film focuses an a peaceful mannered, self-effacing, slightly paranoid billionaire, Charles Morse (Anthony Hopkins) . A lustrous and well-read man with a penchant for esoteric knowledge, Morse is married to Mickey (Elle MacPherson), a young and lovely, successful model. On situation with her in a remote dwelling of Alaska, she is surrounded by her young, fun loving camera crew, while he is seemingly the strange man out. He is astute enough, however, to sense that there are romantic undercurrents between his wife and her photographer, Robert Green (Alec Baldwin) .

When Morse accompanies Robert on what was to be a short excursion into the Alaskan wilderness, looking for a local hunter to pose in the photo shoot, trouble looms ahead, and the test for the survival of the fittest begins. It is here that the capable mind and knowledge of Morse is keep to the test, as they win themselves pitted against nature. Morse rises to the occasion, emerging as a natural leader, while his younger, fitter rival, Robert, is often at a loss as to how to cope in their queer place. It is also through the emerging and changing conditions that they face, that their respective characters emerge. It is in the wilderness that they are both unmasked and emerge as their accurate selves.

This is a film that will withhold the viewer enthralled. Anthony Hopkins has never been better as the quietly daring Morse, and Alec Baldwin is generous as the craven and duplicitous photographer who has cuckolded him. Elle MacPherson is bright as the aesthetic, young, trophy wife. The rest of the supporting cast, including the giant Kodiac possess, are also terrific. This is a superlative survival legend that has something for everyone. Bravo!

The regain, photography, direction, screenplay and the beneficial interaction between Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins all deserve high praise. It says noteworthy for the power of Baldwin and Hopkin’s performances that the beautiful absorb, Vast Bart, did not choose every scene in which he appeared.

Billionaire shimmering, mildly paranoid Hopkins accompanies his trophy wife played by shapely model Elle MacPherson to a photo shoot in the Alaskan wilderness. The always faintly menacing Alec Baldwin is a trendy, sophisticated fashion photographer who has more than a passing interest in Ms. MacPherson. Hopkins reluctantly agrees to accompany Baldwin on a search for an elusive native trapper who Baldwin thinks will be an ideal photo subject. The plane goes down (in a jarringly effective scene) . Three survive, but on their first night the weakest of their party is horrifyingly mauled and taken away by a giant Kodiak contain. Baldwin and Hopkins must fabricate their diagram out of the wilderness with the ghastly knowledge that the gain is stalking them. Hopkins is a wonderfully effective survivor and Baldwin shows a toughness and perseverance that belies his sophisticated image. Will the have triumph? Will they accept out alive? Are Baldwin and Hopkins ultimately partners or deadly adversaries?

Thanks to David Mamet, the screenplay has depth and is probably fleshy of deeper meanings that whizzed proper by me. Lee Tamahori’s glorious direction lifted the film from a merely substantial adventure saga to an piquant contemplate of two men and their inner beings. The script or the interactions never bored me. There is one delicate scene setup that alone was worth the sign of admission to me. Hopkins and Baldwin are peering over a fallen log desperately trying to ascertain the region of the have. Only their upper faces are showing. Hopkins china blue eyes point to big depth and intelligence while Baldwin’s wintry blues bid complete ruin or be killed intensity. I believe reviewers have been unjust to Ms. MacPherson’s contribution. I own she delivered impartial what she was supposed to: a beauty who was handsome, charming and perhaps a puny shallow.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Edge! Click Here

This film is about as perfect as it can be. The only flaw is a very disappointing DVD with no extras. Hopefully, another edition will reach out. Anthony Hopkins is always marvelously boom about his roles; it would be a treat to hear a few words from him. Outtakes on Ample Bart’s scenes would be priceless. I swear waiting for unique edition before purchasing the DVD, but by all means, rent this one! In spite of its totally dumb title, it is one of the titanic films of the decade.

I’m not a Brad Pitt fan. His physical attributes don’t astound and thrill me! But, I’ve got to give it to him: He was convincing in his dual roles as the coffee shop sweetie and Mr. Death. Claire Forlani, whom I’ve never seen in a film before was simply lustrous. She’s the perfect Susan in this parable of one man’s last days on earth. Anthony Hopkins as Bill Parrish is noteworthy, as always. He truly makes you feel as though he’s a man with puny time left and has to exercise the rest of his alloted time cleaning up his act, making amends with his loved ones, assuring his daughters that he loves them and has always loved them. Also, Marcia Ecstatic Hardin and Jeffrey Tambor are both extremely honorable as the number two daughter (in her father’s heart) and her slightly inept (business wise) husband. They’re both touching. I wasn’t set off by the length of the film. I assume we should purchase the time to relish some things in life. Dumb down, relax and like this resplendent offering from Martin Brest. You did a excellent job, Marty!

I’ll admit that only morbid curiosity led me to examine this movie upon it’s initial release. The premise of this remake sounded titillating, but the over the top costs and production problems had been tabloid fodder for months. When it didn’t do blockbuster business, not many people were surprised.

It’s a shame that this movie didn’t do better than mediocre reviews and lukewarm boxoffice receipts. There I sat in the audience marveling at the glowing make and antiques, not to mention the comely costume obtain. So many films these days go for established designers, but this movie stale a studio designer considerable like the days of the veteran Hollywood system. The attention to detail is delicate.

As for the acting, it all boiled down to one scene for me. Anthony Hopkins describing the first time he’d ever had a lamb sandwich to Brad Pitt. It turns into one of the most aesthetic remembrance speeches of a widower for the wife he smooth grieves. Needless to say even this heartless cynic got a bit misty. To have a man explain such fancy without sounding condescending or corny is quite a feat. It’s enough to create you maintain in the power of a noble actor.

Brad Pitt also deserves kudos for this role. Despite living through a personal hell and sustaining an injury, he does a huge job in his double role. I opinion the scene in which Death says kindly bye to Claire Forlani’s character was some of his best acting.

La Scorta is one of the best Italian films of the 90s, although that hasn’t stopped it from disappearing from circulation for years until Blue Underground’s DVD release. Unlike the Eurotrash which is that label’s main stock-in-trade, this is a mighty and sober crime drama (rather than an out-and-out thriller) about the minute group of bodyguards protecting a believe investigating mafia and government corruption in Sicily. It’s certainly not a glamorous portrait: terminally underfunded, they only have two bullet-proof vests between them, and instead of armoured cars they secure clapped-out unmarked vehicles the police can’t even afford to maintain the tanks chunky. There’s not grand in the intention of action, but there’s plenty of suspense over what MIGHT happen. Every abandoned car by the roadside could be a bomb, a stuck gate could be a prime opportunity for an assassin, so that when the expected does finally happen (and to the most definite candidate in the most sure fashion) it doesn’t feel quite like such a cliche, more inevitability. The film does a qualified job of humanising its protagonists en route. While they all have the usual stereotyped listless meat trappings – families, girlfriends, pregnant wives – they exhaust considerable of the first half jockeying for space, making mistakes and inadvertently betraying their charge. Ricky Tognazzi directs with energy and imagination that belies the film’s obscene budget and is well served by his ensemble cast.

Sadly, the DVD transfer, while acceptable, is not grand, although the extras are grand.

Despite the fact that I knew none of the actors and don’t tell Italian, this was a very credible film (and why shouldn’t it be – it was a suitable sage) . The characters were well formed and very well played and the sage was compelling. I mediate not having “tall stars” in this production made it better, as equal attention could be payed to all. This is a film well worth seeing and I will probably stare it many times again.

“Dismal Lagoon” is a heavenly typical anime action series in a lot of ways, not especially outstanding in comparison to some of the shows that have advance before it, but it’s a series that does almost everything accurate. Cowboy Bebop on water beautiful distinguished sums it up. .The expose follows the adventures of a rag-tag crew (is there any other kind? ) of fresh pirates as they pull off jobs and capers for various crime bosses. The protagonist is a jaded businessman who becomes known as “Rock” after he is kidnapped by said pirates and eventually winds up joining them after he turns out to be more resourceful than one might ask.

Rock may be the protagonist but originate no mistake, the star of the exhibit is sociopathic she-pirate Levi (Revi if you seize the Japanese pronunciation), a one-woman wrecking crew with poor attitude to spare. This girl in the best thing this series has going for it as she is a true-blue anti-heroine; mean-spirited, apathetic, and often beyond psychotic. This is rather surprising since the female leads in these shows are typically rather sensitive and valorous types inside of their harsh exteriors, but Levi is awful to the bone and she never lets you forget it for long. Her clashes with the detached newcomer Rock invent up remarkable of the first half of the note and have me, it gets gross. Rounding out the crew are Dutch, the captain of their torpedo boat, and Benny who appears to be the tech guy but frankly, he doesn’t do noteworthy which is disappointing.

Most of the missions are split between two or three episode arcs and consist of such glamorous fare as salvaging a sunken Nazi U-boat or kidnapping a rich brat. Of course there’s always a procure such as a battleship rotund of neo-nazis coming to reclaim their artifacts, or a nanny/housemaid (complete with fetishistic outfit) that gives Levi more than a bustle for her money in some gunbattles that would design John Woo envious. These kind of fringe characters are another reason that “Dark Lagoon” is such a success. My current is a rather vain blademistress in a Chinese dress who teams up with Levi during the last arc of the series. The scene where the two of them are being pursued in a car and fighting with each other over who gets to stand up through the sunroof and acquire the pursuers is a riot. Also of brand is the crew’s well-known employer, a Russian mafiosa with badly scarred skin named Balalaika (say THAT three times like a flash!) who shows up often as the consummate curved businesswoman.

The series is a too-short 12 episodes with no larger epic to protest. Levi’s past is hinted at or glimpsed several times, but never truly explored, though the second season gives us more along those lines and a third is forthcoming. “Murky Lagoon” is a fun demonstrate with wonderful action sequences, mountainous animation, and plenty of shiny characters. Well worth a viewing. If you appreciate at the altar of “Cowboy Bebop”, contemplate this series a must, though newcomers to anime and casual fans should also score a lot to like here. Also, if you’ve ever wondered the best procedure to go about torpedoing an in-flight helicopter, check this display out for clear.

First off, I was really impressed with the production values. The animation and sound was top notch. There was none of that cost saving corner cutting, which really adds to the overall feel of the explain.

Secondly it’s a really brilliant script with complex characters and tightly written plots.

Third lots of nifty violence, but with a gloomy comedy twist.

Don’t go in expecting Cowboy Bebop, although there are similarities Shaded Lagoon is a lot darker. You might like both. Cowboy Bebop is one of my all time favs too. However I accumulate the two shows to have distinctly different flavors.

One thing that appealed to my inner philosophy major was that underlying theme of the whole anime is nihilism(Revy) v existentialism(Rock), which philosophy is more realistic–but without a single descent into academic angst or mention of a philosophical term. It was all rapid paced action with a few amusing turns on the surface, and can be appreciated on impartial that level, but there was heavy epistomological debate going on underneath. Personally, I opinion that was stunning wintry.

In 1937, the WB, capitalizing on Errol Flynn’s spectacular performances in CAPTAIN BLOOD and THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE, cast him in four films, with varying degrees of success. The best, by far, was William Keighley and William Dieterle’s production of the Tag Twain classic, THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, where he supported current WB ‘discoveries’ Billy and Bobby Mauch, portraying London urchin Tom Canty and his look-alike, Prince Edward Tudor. The twins were gifted, young (12 at the time of the filming) actors, with a Freddie Bartholomew-like quality of engrossing innocence, and they gave this version of the oft-filmed sage a sense of reality that split-screen performances by a single actor could never do.

The epic is an bright one, as young Canty, inspired by his mother and a local priest to dream of a finer life than his father, an ill-tempered beggar (Barton MacLane) could provide, sneaks onto the grounds of Buckingham Palace. There, he meets young Prince Edward, who is thrilled to meet a boy his possess age…and, after cleaning him up a bit, is astonished to spy that the pair could pass as twins. Edward decides this is a golden opportunity to gape what life outside the Palace is really like, so, against Canty’s misgivings, the two exchange clothing, and the Prince leaves…creating far more of an uproar than either boy could ever imagine!

Canty is soon considered ‘mad’, as he insists he is not Edward, and the Prince, abused and ridiculed by Tom’s father, is unceremoniously thrown off the Palace grounds when he attempts to return, by a disbelieving Captain of the Guards (Alan Hale, in the first of 12 films he’d get with his friend, Errol Flynn) . The ambitious Earl of Hertford (the always shining Claude Rains) investigates Canty’s claim, and realizes, after interviewing the Captain, that the boy is telling the truth, giving him a golden opportunity to pick power. Ordering the Captain to collect and demolish the Prince, the Earl then threatens to slay Canty if he doesn’t obey his commands.

Things grow desperate for the young Prince, as he attempts to evade his murderous ‘father’ on the streets, until Miles Hendon (Flynn), a playful but good-natured ‘soldier-for-hire’ comes to his abet. Offering his protection to the lad, Hendon thinks him a bit balmy, as well…until events (the child’s distinct despair over the death of Henry VIII, the Palace search party, and a sword duel with the Captain, where Flynn KILLS Alan Hale!!!) convince him otherwise. Then it becomes a accelerate against time to smuggle the steady King into the Coronation, before Canty is crowned, and the Earl assumes “the Power slack the Throne”.

Blessed with a gifted cast, including incredible character actor Montagu Treasure as the dying Henry VIII, the film offers a truly exceptional film regain by Erich Wolfgang Korngold (who would eventually expand the theme into a symphonic work) . Audiences have always been surprised that Errol Flynn’s role is not larger, but as a faithful Twain adaptation, the focus had to be on the two boys, and not on the impoverished soldier. Flynn had fun playing Hendon, and the Mauch twins were nothing less than ample as the leads.

With THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD less than a year away, and Errol Flynn’s star continuing to ascend, the WB had every reason to celebrate, and THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER is a pleasure to witness, to this day!

The Prince & The Pauper is based on the remarkable loved Designate Twain classic. In a nutshell, the dwelling centers around twins, one the nasty heir to the English throne, a other a begger with a heart of gold. When the two accidentally snide paths they become best friends and secretly trade places, powerful to the chagrin of one of the king’s advisors (Claude Rains) who is plotting to waste the heir and catch over himself. Enter into this fray a fortune hunter (Errol Flynn) who vows to position everything accurate for king, country and a healthy financial reward. It all ends pleasantly enough in a sword and swashbuckling sort of plan.

WARNER HOME VIDEO gives us a resplendent looking transfer that is determined to please. The gray scale has been impeccibly balanced with solid blacks and very nice renderings of heavenly detail. Sure scenes demonstrate a touch of edge enhancement and a hint of pixelization, but nothing that will distract from this visually attractive film adaptation. The sound elements are somewhat disappointing by inequity. The main title sequence in particular sounds as though the music track was discovered under a rock. Nevertheless, dialogue – for the most allotment – is presented at an adequate listening level with only the slightest of pops, scratches and vow.

EXTRAS: An essay and theatrical trailer – Great DEAL!

BOTTOM LINE: The Prince & The Pauper is a visually gorgeous movie that, although straying somewhat from Twain’s new intent, is nevertheless faithful enough to remind us why his name continues to be among America’s greatest literary talents. The transfer is solid. I recommend this DVD!
