My kids and I absolutely appreciate the Wayside School books for their highly though-provoking stories and for the joyfully clever ways they play with language and storytelling. Unfortunately, very minute of that comes through to the movie. Definite, the movie fits in LOTS of elements from the books, but many of them are introduced inexplicably and have exiguous role in the narrative. What’s missing is the zany logic that makes the books so charming. If you know the books, you may bask in the references, but the movie itself ends up being glorious standard cartoon slapstick. My five-year-old quiet enjoys watching it, but I was disappointed that the special intelligence and heart of Wayside School has mostly been lost.
This is a tall DVD for children. The books are amazing but the DVD is unbiased as gracious. This DVD may inspire children to read the books too!
