In August of 1991, Gavin Cato, a gloomy seven year broken-down boy, was hit and killed by a car driven by a Hassidic man in the racially polarized neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Consequently, racial tensions bubbled over and riots broke out in that community over the incident, with looting and violence rampant. An Australian Hassidic man, having nothing to do with the car accident, was then stabbed to death in retaliation by Lemrick Nelson, a sad man from the community. Animosity has always speed high between Blacks and Hassidim in that Crown Heights community, the two groups that live side by side in Crown Heights, and it honest took a tragic accident to have that cauldron of hatred bubble over into assassinate and mayhem.

This film is not about the incident that caused all hell to demolish loose. Based upon exact people and events, it is about the arrangement that peacemakers in each of the two groups tried a joint grass roots reach to giving peace a chance. They reached out to male youths on both sides of the huge divide. Their goal was to perform cultural awareness and plan through dialogue, music, and basketball games in hopes of bridging the chasm that existed between these two groups. Although the Hassidim and Blacks had lived side by side with each other for some time in Crown Heights, there was petite mutual opinion and virtually no social interaction.

David Lazerson (Howie Mandel), author of “Switchblades and Skullcaps” and a member of the Hassidic community, is contacted by an emissary of the well-known Rebbe Schneerson of the Lubavitcher sect and asked to near out to the Shaded community in the spirit of reconciliation. He agrees and reaches out to local Dark activist and youth counselor, Richard Green (Mario Van Peebles) . They join forces to try and contain the peace and bridge some plan between the two groups. They establishe Project Cure, a group comprised of both Sad and Hassidic male youths. The film focuses on two of those youths, TJ (De Quan Henderson) and Yudi (Jeremy Blackman), and after a rocky initiate, an unexpected friendship forms between them. While some progress was made by Project Cure, the reality of Crown Heights today is that never the twain shall meet.

This is not one of Showtime’s best films. It is a self-conscious difficulty at best. Howie Mandel’s performance is embarrassing, and the viewer can status his groundless beard a mile away. Mario Van Peebles, however, gives a safe performance, as does De Quan Henderson. It is Jeremy Blackman, however, who gives the standout performance in this film. Unfortunately, Jeremy Kagan’s heavy-handed direction results in a film so obviously preachy that it falls a bit flat, short of its intended tag.

This DVD double feature of Clara Bow at the beginning and during the thick of her career gives us a bright peep of one of the most favorite still stars. DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS (1922) was shot when Clara was only 16 by D.W. Griffith protege’ Elmer Clifton. Her fragment is only a supporting one but you can clearly gaze the star potential there. The main focus of this film is not the romance between the two leads but rather the detailed scenes of Recent Bedford whalers plying their trade. This makes the film a challenging historical document which is not for the squeamish as it contains true and graphic footage of the killing and dismembering of whales. What you stare is MOBY DICK for valid. This print taken from the Killiam Collection is in edifying shape although it seems a limited snappily at times. It is considerable better than the customary VHS version build out by Critic”s Choice some years aid.

PARISIAN Esteem (1925) was made only 3 years later but what a contrast in Clara’s appearance. Here she is the star and fully displays the vivacious charm and charisma that made her so favorite. The memoir of French Apache lovers and their benefactor is a dinky hard to follow probably due to some missing footage and features some rather intriguing interplay between the male leads. The sets of Parisian garrets are wonderful and Lillian Leighton steals the prove as a Marie Dressler like matriarch at a swanky party. This DVD copy was taken from the only surviving print which was discovered in 1998 and restored by the UCLA Film and Televison Archive. All in all an spirited combination of 1920′s style romance with rugged documentary style footage and the chance to gawk Clara Bow do from a Mary Pickford like tomboy into a stout fledged star. Yet another beautiful job from Kino International in their ongoing series of restful film presentations on DVD.

Viewers who look out this Clara Bow double feature will likely compare it to IT, the 1927 charmer to which all of her films are compared sooner or later, the film that finally captured the most naturally exuberant (and unnaturally wounded) personality in calm film. Bow had made more than 30 films in the five years preceding IT, only a handful of which survive in any condition. Even her minor films, therefore, are impossible to ignore. DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS shows us Bow in 1922, barely 17 years broken-down and unique as rain. In her itsy-bitsy role as a long-haired tomboy, she neither poses nor emotes; she is simply herself at 17. The allotment offers few hints of the exquisite flapper whose unembarrassed sensuality would one day startle even Elinor Glyn and deluge Paramount with nearly fifty thousand fan letters a month. PARISIAN Esteem, released three years after DOWN TO THE SEA, teases us with glimpses of the It Girl-to-be. But they are titillating glimpses: the long tresses are gone, replaced by a pushed-up, snip-sprung, crazy-tilt hairdo that eases our entry into the softest, most frightened eyes that ever looked out of a movie camouflage. The comical location is forgettable; Bow is not. PARISIAN Cherish should attend as the springboard to a powerful better Bow film from 1925, THE PLASTIC AGE (available from Image in a twofer with THE Exhibit OFF) . One day, perhaps, the incomparable WINGS (1927) will bag a domestic release. Isn’t it peculiar that the first movie to get the Academy Award for Best Record is not available on a commercial U.S. Location 1 DVD?

CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST will be a cheap exploitation film to some. And a complete grab your blanky and hot co-co to others(like me :) _ This starts off with a warning heed on the movie you are about to perceive(a lot like another Awe masterpiece did in 74) while the warning is being shown you are hearing some of the most HAUNTING music do to celluloid. We then are in a plane flying over the coffee like water of the Amazon(No! Not this Amazon) we then jump scenes to Current York where a T.V.commentator is telling you the viewer that a so few hours flight can lift you to the life of Cannibals(DA DA DUN) We are introduced to 4 very young and fearless individuals who will wing to what they call the Green Inferno and document the lives of Cannibals(DA DA DUN) well they don’t near encourage and a T.V. site hires a professor to earn them with a search party. To compose a long epic short he finds cans of film and brings them benefit to N.Y. to opinion them. What he and the others(including you the viewer) look is truly HORRIFYING!!! I can only remark you this…I have a mountainous Dismay collection and no Scare film has done to me what CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST has done! I’m not saying it is the grossest dread film, nor am I saying its the best dread film. But I will say their is a scene in this movie that made me end the DVD and fetch up to go to the bathroom splash water on my face and say YOUR O.K. Clint c’mon unbiased actors having a genuine time”COUGH”regain a gain of yourself…Thats a gracious lad. If you are looking for blood, blood,BLOOD! Then you might be disappointed. If you are looking for a movie that will develop you be grateful for the life you have and love each breath you retract then my dear friend this is the movie for you…THE ONE THAT GOES ALL THE Plan!!! LONG LIVE THE CAUST!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been vowing to never contemplate Cannibal Holocaust, Cannibal Ferox, and Lucio Fulci films since I was 15. That was when I really got into panic films by George Romero, Dario Argento, Sam Raimi, Wes Craven, and on and on. Recently I watched Cannibal Holocaust uncut at age 19 on the internet thinking I was ready but I wasn’t ready enough(lol) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cannibal Holocaust! Click Here

Ruggero Deodato directed this and remains a cult director today, even appearing in Hostel II and currently making Cannibals(a sequel or Americanized version of Cannibal Holocaust) for mainstream release. The cast includes mature adult film actor Robert Kerman, several lesser-knowns, and mostly sincere natives(if it’s correct but not obvious) . The film is actually centered on a professor who goes to a South American jungle to accept out why “the” documentary crew disappeared. The professor brings the reels attend, then we bag out what happened and notice the footage(which is section of the anecdote) . The film has 80′s independent Italian drama graphics while the “footage” has realistic documentary graphics. The catch has mainly two theme tracks with one as the friendly theme track and the other as the disturbing theme track(which stays in the mind) .

Now I’m obvious people want to know alot about the command. It’s graphically violent and graphically sexual. There is frontal male and female nudity as well but it’s mostly cultural and the male nudity is not up discontinuance. The violence is again graphic and looks trusty in the “footage.” I was frightened by some killings and animal slayings. The animal killings where great, graphic and some even perpetrated by the actors(other than the natives) . The sexual articulate is graphic, not hardcore, but graphic since there are brief rapes and casual sex scenes. This is not for everyone and not many regain away not apprehensive.

My notion is the film is unpleasant for the acting and such but yet it’s sterling for it’s cinematography and elements. I like how it’s a film-inside-a-film like those films about a fictional snuff film inside like 8mm. This film has no point yet it does have satire. Anyways I really don’t like the film but I do gawk something more than sensationalism. I only have respect for the film. I won’t sight it again and I may not peek Cannibal Ferox unless I can be convinced it’s not as disturbing and traumatizing. I wan’t to point something out. This has been unsuitable as a snuff film but it’s not. Even the “footage” is counterfeit and fictional. The only actual killings were done to the animals which I condemned since they were only archaic as props. AGAIN, this film is not for everyone and not many are desensitive while watching it.

But with their alliance obtain, the Farmers display a battle flag to the Samurai – and the group prepares themselves for the first of many battles to advance.

My Review: Although not really comparable to Kurosawa’s masterpiece, this tale re-telling continues to excite and dazzle. This incandescent and beautifully detailed work of art brings Kurosawa’s message and challenging narrative to the 21st Century. If you’re looking for an identical clone to Kurosawa’s unusual, you’ll be disappointed, but most likely fair as entertained.

Originally produced for PBS television, the Emmy-winning “Before Stonewall” is a must-see documentary for anyone researching Satisfied American history. What makes this film so invaluable is its success in recreating – through photographs, film clips, and later-day interviews – a period in time that was carefully and deliberately NOT recorded as it was happening due to the pervasive institution of “the closet”, and the very exact dangers that faced those plucky enough to crack start the door and step out into the light. As one fearless lesbian pioneer remembers, unbiased being accused of being a satisfied woman was grounds for involuntary commitment to a mental institution during her youth. Runt wonder, then, that there is such a paucity of material documenting the blissful movement pre-Stonewall, especially during the years from 1900-1950, before the earliest Ecstatic and Lesbian social and political institutions in the United States were founded.

The cornerstone of this noteworthy film is the handful of interviews conducted with some elderly activists from the years before the Stonewall riots began on June 27, 1969. With humor, dignity, and matter-of-fact courage, these men and women deny personal stories about their experiences in the armed forces, in the halls of government, in society, and in their home lives during the years in which America at tremendous experienced the roaring Twenties, the Substantial Depression, the Second World War, the beginning of the Baby Affirm era, and the radical Sixties. Their recollections are not only engaging and brilliantly told; they are of necessary importance in thought the legal heritage and history of today’s American contented community. The DVD edition offers some tantalizing extra material, including some expanded interviews, and footage of poet Allen Ginsberg reading two of his early compositions. Very highly recommended in terms of both quality and mutter.

For many of us, the seeds of the gratified liberation movement started on the nights of Stonewall, when a group of people unbiased decided that they weren’t going to recall it anymore. However, there was joyful life before Stonewall, which is documented in this quickly paced documentary.

The movie attempts to collapse about forty years of jubilant history into a documentary of about ninety minutes. With a plethora of interviews, people telling their hold stories, it’s fabulous what it does conceal. While the depth of the history may be somewhat lacking, the true impact of the document is an belief of the roots of where the overjoyed movement came from.

It seems as we enter times of trial and tribulation, it’s considerable to understand our roots. It’s those roots, based in the stories that are in this movie, that ground us and relieve instill a sense a pride in where we’ve approach from, and where we’ll be going. With that pride comes strength, strength of will, strength of character. The people who so bravely walked before us, in the 1920′s where wearing a red tie with matching hanky was the most definite mark, to those impressive stir queens who finally decided that enough was enough, are our sources of self-empowerment.

The BBC’s current production of its classic series, Doctor Who, weathered its first major casting change admirably. Most actors remain in the lead role for at least three years, but for Christopher Eccleston, one year was enough, and his Doctor (aka ‘Nine’) died in the season one finale. In keeping with Who tradition, the Doctor, upon his death, regenerates into a completely unusual body. Taking the TARDIS controls from Eccleston is another Russell T Davies alumnus, David Tennant (who headlined Davies’ production of Casanova) as the tenth incarnation of the Doctor (aka ‘Ten’) . Tennant had his work slit out for him, following Eccleston’s superior turn as the Time Lord, but he made the transition so seamlessly that the character truly seems like the same man in a different body.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doctor Who – The Complete Second Series! Click Here

Aiding this transition is largely the same writing and production staff, as well as the same co-star (Billie Piper as Rose Tyler) and supporting cast (Camille Coduri as Jackie Tyler and Noel Clarke as Mickey Smith) . It’s to Tennant’s credit that he not only immediately puts his believe brand on the character but maintains Eccleston’s level of chemistry with the supporting cast. Ten is physically younger than Nine, more brash, more impulsive, less tormented by guilt, but unruffled achingly lonely. His loneliness becomes a running theme throughout the season, touched on in nearly every episode. Eccleston played the Doctor as he played Steve Baxter in Davies’ The Second Coming (a tormented otherworldly being) ; Tennant plays the Doctor as Casanova (a young, lovelorn romantic hero) .

The Doctor’s romantic attachments, in fact, become the vehicle by which Davies explores the central theme of loneliness. Ten and Rose get upon and deepen the romance that Nine and Rose began in the first season. Their fancy is palpable; they’re often literally willing to die for each other. In the UK, the series is family-oriented and rarely strays beyond the PG level, so this romance is never physically consummated; the characters don’t even kiss. Despite this–in fact, because of it–their feelings are all the more poignant. (And how often do we study a depiction of apt and abiding adore on television that doesn’t involve some kind of bump-and-grind? ) By the raze of the season, the relationship has near pudgy circle: the Doctor has taught Rose all he can; it’s time for her to leave him and effect to employ all the things she’s learned. Their final separation is tragic but yet also hopeful: despite the sadness, the viewer knows Rose will thrive in her modern environment. Billie Piper’s send-off couldn’t have been more obvious or more lovingly written (and it leaves initiate the possibility of her returning to the series in the future for a guest set) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doctor Who – The Complete Second Series! Click Here

Nobody who leaves Who is ever truly gone. The great “School Reunion” brings aid an venerable fan current, Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) . Again, romance is the means by which Davies explores the Doctor’s impact on his companions’ lives. The epic is beautifully written: suspenseful, amusing, romantic, and poignant. Sladen slips support into the role effortlessly, and Anthony Stewart Head provides a unbelievable villain in the inappropriate Mr. Finch. Romance also infuses the imaginative “Girl in the Fireplace,” in which an army of clockwork repair droids from the fifty-first century stalks Madame de Pompadour (Sopia Myles) . The Doctor is clearly smitten with the young Reinette, but the episode’s conclusion showcases how the heartbreakingly short human lifespan will always thwart such attachments.

But romance isn’t all the second season has to offer: dilapidated foes return (Daleks, Cybermen, Cassandra) as well as broken-down friends (Harriet Jones, Sarah Jane, K-9, Pete Tyler, the Face of Boe) . Also, the settings finally regain away from Earth for a few episodes, and there are a couple of trips to Earth’s past. The recurring characters perform beautifully, especially Mickey Smith, who finally comes into his occupy as a hero. Particularly salubrious is the two-part fable “The Impossible Planet”/ “The Satan Pit,” which finds the Doctor and Rose in a bleak location place on a planet perpetually circling a dusky hole. But the trusty standout of the season might well be “The Christmas Invasion,” an hour-long special that aired on Christmas day, 2005. This episode allows the supporting characters–and by extension the viewers–an opportunity to adjust to the modern Doctor, and it allows Ten to put his bold bona fides. The guest cast is fine, particularly Penelope Wilton as the UK’s novel prime minister, Harriet Jones. An argument between the PM and Ten at the episode’s conclusion is smart, superior of the West Sail, showing that Davies isn’t insecure to challenge his viewers’ perceptions of heroism and villainy.

Other highlights of the season are “The Rise of the Cybermen”/ “The Age of Steel,” the chilling “Tooth and Claw,” the off-beat “Care For and Monsters,” and of course, the lustrous finale, “Army of Ghosts”/ “Doomsday.” Of all the episodes, only the disjointed “Dread Her” feels sub-par. The overall quality of the season is powerful, given the amount of backstage shuffling that took site (e.g., the timing of Piper’s departure was initially unclear; a few episodes underwent last-minute rewrites) . And yet another challenge looms ahead for Davies as he reinvents the note in the wake of “Doomsday,” which writes out literally the entire supporting cast. Only two seasons in, and an era has already ended.

Much of the season’s success is owed to Tennant, who has mercurial established himself as one of the most favorite Doctors in the show’s long history. His absorb cherish for the series and the character shines through every moment he’s on scene, and he effortlessly conveys the Doctor’s past through his expressions, body language, and vocal inflections. If Eccleston was “Doctor Unique,” Tennant is “Doctor Classic-Modern,” melding perfectly the older and more contemporary portrayals of the character. His chemistry with Piper is nothing short of magical, and he also plays wonderfully off the supporting and guest actors.

As with the first season, the second season is best viewed in pristine DVD rather than the hacked-up versions shown on TV. The boxed area includes the usual extras; viewers should do the Pudsey Cutaway/ Children in Need special their first stop–it’s an vital prologue to “The Christmas Invasion.” Season two is proof clear that Doctor Who can own its fill with lovely distinguished anything else currently on television.

Eccelston did a fabulous job as the Doctor and Tennant unprejudiced gets better and better as the series progresses. The astounding thing about this incarnation is that you don’t have to have been a fan from the early days. The reveal is accessible to recent viewers, while holding onto the history – as evidenced by Sarah Jane and K9. The chronicle telling is superior and it’s mammoth to observe a reveal in this day and age that does not always wrap up at the slay of the broadcast hour.

This series has drama, humor, tragedy, everything you could want in pleasant TV. For the unique viewer, and the extinct, we learn more about how the Doctor came to be the last of the Time Lords, and he gives out tidbits of his history for the current viewer.

When you gain these DVDs, sit support, relax and luxuriate in the rush. It’s unbelievable!

Yep, the unsuitable MTV indicate now has its very hold movie. “Jackass: The Movie” includes all of your common misfits as they do some of the most nasty, painful, and disgusting stunts ever to be caught on camera. Join Johnny Knoxville and his gang as they do everything possible to fabricate determined that this is the most execrable and disgusting thing your eyes have ever seen. I will not give away any of the stunts, for what’s so immense about the movie is being surprised.

There’s no storyline, no spot, and no set-up. It is what it is, and it makes no apologies. That’s why I fancy it so great. I have never cringed so many times in my life! I was laughing non-stop and my eyes were flooded with tears when it was all said and done. Be warned, this is NOT for people who catch easily offended or disgusted. The DVD is outstanding, being that it is loaded with so many special features for you to play around with. The best are the 27 additional minutes (separate feature from the movie) that were deemed to atrocious for the theatres. It’s like watching a complete Jackass episode uncensored. Other features included are two commentary tracks, “making-of” feature, outtakes, trailer and promo spots, music videos and more! The commentary tracks are hilarious and are worth checking out. (Especially the cast commentary track. They’re rarely talking about the movie and it is more like they’re fair hanging out and drinking!)

“Jackass: The Movie” is painfully droll and disgustingly snide. I’m contented the DVD came out when it did, because this is the perfect time to peruse something like this with all that’s going on in the news lawful now. Really helps you win your mind off things. I laughed like crazy and cringed like there was no tomorrow. One thing is for sure; Knoxville and his crew are all going straight to Hell…. and so am I for laughing at it! I’m not a Mike Myers fan, and I avoided this film–and its sequels–like the plague when they were on the tremendous veil. But I now know the error of my ways: AUSTIN POWERS is one of the freshest bits of purely intriguing, mindless fluff to arrive along in quite a while, the perfect antedote to an overcast and bad-mood sort of day.

The anecdote is an amalgamation of the more excessive region ideas of such films as DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER and OUR MAN FLINT. Fashion photographer by day and swinging peer by night, Austin Powers is the toast of psychedelic London–and more than a match for Dr. Despicable. But when Dr. Outrageous has himself frozen, Powers does the same, and the two defrost some thirty years later and resume their battle in the considerable more up-tight 1990s. The most definite target of the spoof is the James Bond films, but fans of 1960s film will have a field day spotting the film’s seize offs on such characters as Matt Helm, Derek Flint, Emma Peel, celebrities like The Beatles and Andy Warhol, and such diverse films as THE TENTH VICTIM and the camp classic DR. GOLDFOOT AND THE GIRL BOMB. And dare we mention the sixties’ occupy classic swinging ogle spoof, the immoral CASINO ROYALE?

Myers is greatly droll in the double role of Austin Powers and Dr. Sinful, both of whom have powerful worry adjusting to everything from fine sex to inflation, and Elizabeth Hurley is quite advantageous in the Diana Rigg-ish role of sidekick Vanessa Kensington. But the steady fun here is in the details–and the details include every one from Michael York to Robert Wagner to Burt Bacharach to Carrie Fisher, “Fembots” with killer pasties, and Italian sexpot Fabiana Udenio as a character with the most devastating name since Honor Blackman hit the conceal in GOLDFINGER. The soundtrack is impartial as swinging as it gets, with blasts of everything from “These Boots Are Made For Walking” and “I Touch Myself.” And ogle for a hilarious spoof of Bob Fosse-inspired choreography during the main credits!

You won’t win any deep thoughts in AUSTIN POWERS, and thank heaven for it: giggles and grins are the order of the day, and the film delivers them in abundance. The DVD is a nice one as well, offering your choice of widescreen or pan-and-scan, some engaging notes and deleted scenes, and comic commentary. Seize it and retain on your shelf for that rainy day.

Mike Myers is lickety-split becoming, if he isn’t already, the heir apparent to Mel Brooks in the sense that he is a master of jokes based on bodily functions. AUSTIN POWERS–INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY has all the elements of scatalogical humor: urination, fornication, masturbation, penis enlargement (almost anything to do with the penis really), allotta fagina, femmebots with gun barrel breasts… jeez, he even has a long scene in a toilet booth (with a fun cameo by Tom Arnold) . And like Brooks, Myers is a master of movie genre satire. If Brooks had taken on a 007 spoof, it would ravishing end to this. And Brooks would play multiple roles as well.

Still, Myers is to be congratuated for his undoubted originality. His interpretation and reinterpretation of 60s and 70s pop culture, which he also demonstrated a mastery of in WAYNE’S WORLD, is his hold. Allotment Bond movie, fraction Laugh-In, section sci-fi, all hilarious, AUSTIN POWERS is one of the best comedies to have emerged in the 90s.

When MGM first released Moonstruck on DVD they inexplicably did so with an outrageous pan and scan transfer. They’ve rectified this plot with a recent deluxe edition that restores its friendly aspect ratio and with a collection of unique extras. Moonstruck was the My Great Corpulent Geek Wedding of its day only infinitely better and about an Italian family as opposed to a Greek one. Watching Norman Jewison’s film again, you realize honest how remarkable Nia Vardalos’ film is heavily indebted to it. If Moonstruck is La Boheme than Greek Wedding is Tony and Tina’s Wedding.

It’s time to exhaust your feeble disc as a coaster as this edition is definitely worth the double dip. MGM has taken TBS’ dinner and a movie to the next level by including three recipe cards with magnificent Italian meals so that you can do your enjoy cooking and eat it while watching the movie.

Carried over from the previous edition is the audio commentary by Cher, director Norman Jewison and screenwriter John Patrick Shanley. Both Jewison and Shanley talk about their fascination with death while Cher talks about the importance of costume and how it helps her find into character. This is a solid commentary with brilliant observations and favorable anecdotes from everyone.

“Moonstruck: At the Heart of an Italian Family” takes us through the genesis of the film mixing interviews done at the time of filming (Cage and Cher) and novel ones (Aiello and Dukakis) . There is tremendous, behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage as Jewison and Shanley capture us through the film telling several enchanting anecdotes.

“Pastas to Pastries: The Art of Dazzling Italian Food” is a tour of some of the best restaurants in Slight Italy, in particular on Mulberry Street. You have six different places to decide from and their chefs exhibit how to beget a few choice foods guaranteed to accomplish you hungry. If you savor to cook and eat than this extra is for you.

Finally there is the “Music of Moonstruck” that examines the role that music plays in the movie. The first screening went badly because the music was all harmful.

A grand flick. Five stars is not enough. Cher & Cage are awesome together. Gardenia & Dukakis (as Cher’s parents) are almost as smart. The backdrops of Manhattan and Brooklyn glimpse terrific. Some stout & memorable scenes… 1. Cher meeting Cage for the first time in the bakery basement, 2. Cage expressing his fancy for her the morning after, 3. Dukakis & Mahoney having dinner together & walking home, 4. Cher & Cage, (and her father and his “date”) at the opera, and 5. The family sitting around the kitchen table when husband to-be Aiello shows up. Six Oscar nominations – and three awards. Cher & Dukakis were very deserving and this was easily the best screenplay of the year. How director Norman Jewison didn’t obtain the Oscar is beyond me. I ran out and bought the delux ’06 edition the week it was released. Puny recount upgrade – the widescreen is definitely better than the beefy frame, but there’s no impprovement on the sound… dare I say it’s worse. The music and most of the dialogue sounds like it is standard stereo (perhaps even mono at some points) … but the right kicker is the background music is so loud at times you can’t hear the character talking. Broad movie, but I feel it deserved better treament on the re-release.

Based on the manga and anime series that has captured the attention of viewers worldwide, “Death Heed” the live action film makes its diagram to the US on DVD.

“Death Price” is an adaption of the accepted manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata and stars Tatsuya Fujiwara (known for his work in the celebrated “Battle Royale” films), directed by Shusuke Kaneko (known for the 2006 hit film “Gamera”) and another theme song “Snow (Hey Oh) ” by the current band RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS.

The sequel is the conclusion to the thrilling cat and mouse roam as the murderer Kira (Light Yagami, who has attained a great cult following for killing off criminals) tries to glean a contrivance to ruin his nemesis, the top investigator in the police force known as L. While L suspects Light Yagami as being Kira.

The film is 140 minutes long, pacing was indeed well done and overall, despite being different from the manga and anime series, both Shusuke Kaneko and Tetsuya Oishii managed to advance up with a thrilling, dim and intelligent storyline that remains faithful to the overlying theme of the film.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

The film is featured in 16×9 anamorphic widescreen and was originally shot in 35mm (1:85:1 ratio) . My main interest was to witness how the CGI would be for the shinagami Ryuk and Rem. And how that would translate on film and the two shinigami ogle exactly like it does in the anime and manga series but Rem seems to seek more less detailed than Ryuk. But overall, the CG works with the film.

As for audio, the film is featured in both English and Japanese via digital 5.1 and 2.0 stereo. I typically abhor English dubbing of Asian language films but what brought a smile to my face was that VIZ mature the fresh boom actors of the anime series (which had huge English dub work) on this series. So, for those who are fond of Brandon Swaile’s Light, Alessandro Juliani’s L, Brian Drummond’s Ryuk, Shannon Chan-Kent as Misa and the other English dub lisp actors will be contented to know that they did the English dub for the live film. That surprised me and definitely major kudo points for Viz Media for keeping things consistent in the tell acting.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Special features in the film include the Death Ticket anime trailer, the Japanese and US trailer and Viz Pictures Presents. The indispensable featurette is “the Making of Death Stamp II”, a 23-minute featurette which includes interviews with the director and the main talent alive to with the film. Definitely suitable insight of what the talent felt about the characters and the challenges that they faced. For example, Ken’ichi Matsuyama (L) having to constantly eat sweets. He mentions that he had to do it so worthy that he couldn’t tolerate it anymore and couldn’t swallow. He impartial spit it out after the shot. Also, explanations by director Shusuke Kaneko on differences from the live film and the manga version. Overall, a solid featurette.

“DEATH Stamp II: The Last Name” was extremely common in Japan. Having been #1 in the box office for five weeks and earning 5.5 Billion yen in Japan, the film was indeed a success.

I enjoyed the film a lot and the pacing was distinguished better with the second film but if anything was fantastic, it was Tetsuya Oishii’s screenplay. It is arresting to collect so noteworthy storyline from the manga and making a live action film. There is so worthy fable in the “Death Notice” manga that it would be difficult to translate all that in two films. So, there had to be major differences in the live film versus the manga and unfortunately, for many films based from a long manga series, they don’t succeed because they try to condense everything into one film.

As for “Death Impress II: The Last Name”, Oishii manages to originate a unusual storyline that is so different from the manga series but yet manages to finish within the confines of the main focal point. Kira vs. L and finding a good conclusion.

Having the storyline so different from the manga, I was pleasantly surprised by it but by the film’s kill, I was rather cheerful. Both Kaneko and Oishii pulled it off.

What I savor about this film is that Kira and L are two individuals who are incandescent and the arrangement they try to outdo each other, is always incredible. In a method, it’s like a chess game between these two as they do what they can to outwit each other.

Also, I enjoyed seeing how many other characters were integrated into the overall storyline. And intellectual how different this film is from the manga and anime series, I was glad with the conclusion of the film and overall, I really enjoyed the sequel. Pleasant storytelling by Oishii and managing to pull of a storyline that is objective as satisfying as the manga but yet quite different.

If you enjoyed the first live film, then you will definitely want to win up the sequel. “DEATH Heed II: THE LAST NAME” is a thrilling, suspenseful and savory film. Highly recommended!
